Across the district, students, educators, and community members engaged in meaningful activities that celebrated Black history and culture.

Creative Expression at Wardlaw Elementary

At Wardlaw Elementary, students channeled their creativity to help design a Black History Month board with original drawings and descriptions of influential and inspirational people. This artistic tribute, displayed in the HR office, is a daily reminder of Black leaders' lasting impact in shaping history.

Loma Vista’s Musical and Cultural Showcase

Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy filled the campus with music, movement, and history as each grade came together to present lively songs and performances in honor of Black History Month. Through these heartfelt presentations, students shared essential pieces of history and embraced the power of storytelling through the arts.

Black Gavel Awards

The Community Democratic Club of Vallejo recently hosted the Black Gavel Awards to honor Black elected officials, including our own VCUSD trustees, Dr. Latyna Young and Dean Hodges.

‘When the Mirror Shifts’—A Night of Inspiration

The African American Parent Network (AAPN) hosted its annual Black History Month Showcase,  “When the Mirror Shifts,” at Vallejo High School, uniting the VCUSD community for an evening of reflection, empowerment, and celebration. The ’90s-themed event honored the past—opening with a recording from the Rodney King riots—and looked toward the future with hope and unity through dance, spoken word, music, and inspirational quotes from Black leaders, including several from Vallejo. In a recurring call-to-action, students called on educators to incorporate culturally and socially relevant issues in the classroom. Performances by the AAPN Steppers, AAPN LITTLES, AAPN Boys, Omega Gents, Lincoln Elementary students, and additional VCUSD students, teachers, and administrators explored themes of identity, justice, and community strength.
